Dutch Water Days (DWD) is a series of webinars on cooperation and possible Dutch contributions to the Moroccan water sector. Sustainable water management is vital due to the arid and highly variable climate in Morocco. The water reserves are not sufficient for the current consumption, resulting in a current net loss of fossil water.
National Water Plan 2020-2050 and Priority Water Program 2020-2027
The Moroccan government has developed a National Water Plan (NEP) for the period 2020-2050. The plan’s budget is estimated at 383 billion Moroccan dirhams (35 billion EUR). For the immediate future (2020-2027) a Priority Water Program for potable water and irrigation has been agreed, with a budget of 115 billion Moroccan dirhams (10,5 billion EUR).
The Moroccan Water Program for potable water and irrigation is focused on the following main priorities:
- Improve the water supply through the construction of dams and the connection of hydraulic basins;
- The desalination of sea water;
- The integration of all rural centers into structured drinking water supply systems;
- The provision of water resources necessary for the development of sustainable agriculture;
- The preservation of ecosystems and the fight against pollution.
As Morocco seeks to strengthen its technical cooperation in the water sector, there are opportunities for The Netherlands organizations and companies to contribute to Morocco’s efforts to achieve the objectives of this ambitious program.
